Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox in Rumford, Maine

We left Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park and road west passing through Bangor, Maine and eventually stopping for a rest in the cool old town mill town of Rumford where I was delighted to find a statue of American folk hero Paul Bunyon along with Babe his Blue Ox 🙂

The original Paul Bunyon statue is in Bemidji, Minnesota and I enjoyed telling Kristhawee all about this colorful folk hero and his adventures with Babe. Here’s a fun Paul Bunyon movie from Disney that I look forward to sharing with my son 🙂

The rest area where we discovered Paul Bunyon was on a beautiful reservoir which powered a hydro dam.

The clouds were looking ominous above Paul’s smiling face so we put on our rain gear and pressed on towards New Hampshire!

Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park Visitor Center and the most expensive campsite ever!

We followed the Acadia National Park Loop Road to Bar Harbor where we stopped for a well earned ice cream and to figure out where we’d sleep for the night. A beautiful tall ship in the harbor-

Well deserved ice cream for the little guy 🙂

Land Yacht still looking good with over 100,000 miles under her belt 🙂

Sadly the Black Woods campground in Acadia was completely booked. Well, we were pretty much out of clean clothes and needed to do laundry so I looked up the nearest KOA- >$80 for a tent site!

IMG_3906.PNG

$80 for a camp spot?? What’s up with that??!? A couple shots of our camping spot. Not terrible, but certainly not worth 80 bucks…

IMG_4024.JPG

On our way to the KOA we stopped at the Acadia National Park Visitor Center so that Kristhawee could have a Ranger look over his workbook so that he could collect his Junior Ranger badge. Bravo son!

IMG_3912.JPG

We went for a stroll before dark and Kristhawee met some nice kids to play with. There was an old timer serving up lobster dinners, corn on the cob and clam chowder- good stuff!

Tomorrow we ride to New Hampshire!!

Riding the Historic Carriage Roads of Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia’s Park Loop Road offers some amazing coastal views in the park and is a sweet ride!

IMG_3925.JPG

Much of the one-way 27 mile Park Loop follows the Historic Carriage roads that John D. Rockefeller Jr helped create during the Great Depression in the 1920s and 1930s.

IMG_3922.JPG
Besides the natural beauty of Mount Desert Island, the stone bridges, distinctive signs and “Rockefeller’s Teeth” made this a memorable ride.

Father and son visit Sandy Beach, Acadia National Park, Maine, USA!

Sandy Beach in Acadia National Park is one of the only sand beaches on Mount Desert Island and is certainly worth a visit! First I have to wake up the little guy! 😉

IMG_3951.JPG

Kristhawee made some progress on his Junior Ranger workbook while I cooked breakfast. He got the neighbor kids interested too 🙂

The ride to Sandy Beach was quite pleasant 🙂

It was a beautiful day and Sandy Beach was packed! Parking lots were full, but being on two wheels we were able to find a spot 🙂

It was quite windy on the beach and the water was so cold that not many were brave or dumb enough to dive in. No worries, we enjoyed climbing in the rocks and playing on the beach 🙂

Finally it was time to ride on! Still a lot to see and do in Acadia National Park! Another sticker for the Land Yacht 😉

Seawall Campground, Acadia National Park, Maine

On the way back to camp we picked up some dinner supplies-

IMG_3900.JPG

Kristhawee really hit it off with the boys camping next to us and was tickled pink when they let him borrow one of their bikes 🙂

IMG_4014.JPG

Still had a couple bottles of New Guy IPA from the local Atlantic Brewing-

IMG_3953.JPG

I was raised “European-style” where kids get a sip of wine with their evening meal. A sip won’t do a kid any harm and may actually be good for them. Kristhawee certainly seems to agree 😉

IMG_3955.JPG

It’s actually a bit scary how much this kid loves beer…

Father and son explore the Seawall in Acadia National Park

Seawall in Acadia National Park is a naturally occurring granite and loose boulder and rock seawall located on the southwestern side of Mount Desert Island, a few miles south of Southwest Harbor.

This amazing natural Seawall is walking distance from our campsite.

My son enjoyed searching for critters in the tidal pools 🙂

Father and son at Echo Lake, Acadia National Park, Maine, USA!

After a nice hike there’s no better way to cool down than jumping in a beautiful lake!

You may notice I somehow managed to forget Kristhawee’s bathing suit. Didn’t phase him a bit, he wasn’t shy about hitting the beach in his boxers. Good boy!

Father and son explore Acadia National Park, Maine, USA! Hiking the Beech Cliffs Trail!

Good morning from Seawall Campground in Acadia National Park!

IMG_4016.JPG

Kristhawee is a great helper at breakfast time 🙂 The cheesy eggs master!

IMG_4017.JPG

The families camping next to us had some pretty cute kids 🙂

IMG_3901.JPG

Skies are never as blue as after a big storm! With Hurricane Arthur gone fine weather returned to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park.

IMG_3996.JPG

I asked a Park Ranger for some recommendations for a good hike with my boy and she steered us to the trails above Echo Lake. Good stuff!
Beech Cliffs Trail!

IMG_4011.JPG

Was a bit surprised to discover that this trail includes a bunch of steel ladders. No problem for my adventurous little boy, but imagine this could be a challenge for some kids…

IMG_4006.JPG

A fantastic trail that is short but covers a lot of vertical!

Taking shelter from Hurricane Arthur in Bar Harbor, Maine

Kristhawee and I bundled up in our warmest clothes and rain gear and walked to the Seawall Campground shuttle bus stop. There were some big trees down in the campground, including a giant old birch that had flattened a picnic table. It was lucky no one was camping in that site- a tree that size could certainly kill.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the shuttle buses were still running, albeit off schedule and having to take alternate routes on account of many roads being blocked by downed trees.

It took a long time to reach Bar Harbor, but it was rather exciting to be driven around Mount Desert Island during the tail end of a hurricane. It was very cold and windy and we took refuge in the Jesup Library, a beautiful old building, where we enjoyed some books and shelter from the storm.

20140806-053805-20285747.jpg

It was getting close to lunch time so we wandered down the street to the Lazy Lobster Deli where Kristhawee ordered a pretty darn awesome flatbread pizza and I enjoyed a large bowl of clam chowder. Kristhawee didn’t want to try the chowder but we have a rule he has to try everything and he loved it!

We wandered around Bar Harbor a little after lunch as the rain was letting up and the weather was improving but it was still very windy and cold. The bus ride back to Seawall campground was long and circuitous on account of more downed trees and blocked roads. My little guy passed out 🙂

IMG_3893.JPG

Finally the rain stopped and the winds died down; it was actually a fairly pleasant evening. I bought some dry firewood and we enjoyed dinner by the fire and s’mores for dessert.

IMG_4019.JPG

I very much enjoyed sampling local micro brews along the way. This local IPA from the Atlantic Brewing Company was mighty fine!

Weathering Hurricane Arthur in Acadia National Park!

The timing of Hurricane Arthur’s arrival was, all things considered, rather agreeable. Kristhawee and I had time to get dinner and get ready for bed before the rains and wind really picked up strength.

20140805-031946-11986545.jpg

We read a couple chapters from the fantastic book by Jean George: “My Side of the Mountain” and fell asleep in our little tent, hoping we’d survive the storm.

20140805-033151-12711988.jpg

My son can sleep through the wildest of weather. Me, not so much. I spent a mostly sleepless night listening to the wind howl and the rain bucket down. At times it felt like the wind would flatten our little tent, but after every strong gust would nearly knock it over the Marmot would pop back up, and we survived the night dry and warm. I was quite surprised to find I could get a data connection in the Seawall campground. Checking the radar and current conditions in the early hours of July 5th-

20140805-032705-12425064.jpg

It was still raining hard and the wind was still howling but we decided to suit up and see if we could catch a shuttle to Bar Harbor. Are you ready little guy?

20140805-033014-12614465.jpg

Wet wet wet, but my boy is still smiling so all is well! 🙂
